Municipal audits: MEC to crack the whip

2011-07-29 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube, has summoned mayors and accounting officers from 19 municipalities across the province and is expected to read them the riot act for failing to comply with the requirements of the Auditor-General.

Msunduzi is expected to be one of the municipalities to attend the meeting, which is to be held in the Durban departmental office this morning. According to insiders, all the municipalities that received qualified audits have been summoned.

Department spokesperson Lennox Mabaso said in a statement yesterday, “The Auditor-General has fingered these municipalities as being responsible for slowing the provincial march to clean audits. This has resulted in the number of them deemed to have incurred irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure amounting to millions of rands.”

He added that “the MEC will pronounce on sanctions that will be imposed on those that failed to comply”.
