Municipal manager appointed

MSUNDUZI Municipality has finally appointed a new municipal manager, ending months of speculation.

The announcement to appoint Mxolisi Nkosi was made at a press conference yesterday evening.

Administrator Sibusiso Sithole said Nkosi, formerly the manager of the Kokstad Municipality, was selected from 88 candidates after the position was advertised several times.

Sithole said, “We tried to scout for a suitable incumbent together with members of the Executive Committee [Exco] in their capacity as the selection panel.”

He said they wanted to be sure of the calibre of the person chosen.

“All of us treated this with the integrity it deserves and followed all the necessary processes … to come to this decision,” Sithole said, adding that they believe this is an important milestone for the municipality.

All political parties were happy with Nkosi’s appointment, which council chief whip Truman Magubane called a historic moment for the city.

DA caucus leader Bill Lambert said they endorsed the process that was followed.

Msunduzi Mayor Chris Ndlela said, “We hope that we have caught the biggest fish in the pond.”

He thanked members of the media for not venturing into rumour mongering and allowing the due process to unfold.

Sithole said, “Nkosi should be commencing with his duties at the latest by the beginning of December; however, I am hoping that he can begin earlier than that.”

The Witness learnt that before Nkosi arrived at the Kokstad Municipality, that council got 10 consecutive audit disclaimers, but in his first year in charge he managed to get a clean bill of financial health for Kokstad.

Nkosi is currently a head of department in the Co-operative Governance Department, a position he held before joining Kokstad Municipality.

He is qualified in commercial and financial accounting, has a diploma in business management and has certificates in local government.

DA caucus leader in Kokstad Francois Rogers said, “The man has a financial brain and he certainly turned the municipality around.
