Municipality to investigate 241 Currie Road

2013-11-29 00:00

FOLLOWING the Save Our Berea meeting on Tuesday evening the municipality have indicated they will take action regarding a development on the corner of Currie and St Thomas roads.

Present at the meeting were several municipal officials including Eric Parker, Ravin Indurjeeth from town planning and Abdull Domingo, senior manager enforcement and prosecution in the city engineer’s department.

In March residents adjacent to four properties in St Thomas Road were notified that these would be demolished. According to Dr Edwina Ward, local residents were assured by a municipal official, whose name is known to The Witness, that the demolition was permissible. The houses were demolished in April.

“Since then we have been plagued by noise,” says Ward. “The road is being used as part of the building site and the boundaries have been ignored. Work goes on from seven in the morning until nine at night and all day on Saturdays and Sundays.”

It has also been alleged that the plans for the development, known as 241 Currie Road, have not been passed.

Katherine Reardon, the developer of the property, was asked if the plans had been passed. “I don’t know,” she said. “They were passed by the town planning department. But I will have to check with the architect.”

Reardon said she would contact the architect and get back with confirmation. She had not done so by the time of going to press.
