Municipality turns down damage claims of R99?600 from January storm

2013-05-17 00:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality will not pay for any damages caused by the fierce storm of January 6, the council resolved yesterday.

The executive committee (Exco) discussed a report which disclosed that the damage to council property from the storm amounted to R809 100, while claims from residents totalled R99 599,86, which the council said it would not pay.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said residents should have claimed from their own insurance companies and not from the municipality because the damage was the result of natural causes.

“We understand that the January 6 storms caused electricity outages lasting more than six days, but this was not the municipality’s fault as they were caused by the storm.”

Mndeni Meats claimed R8 247 for spoiled meat.

Claims from private individuals ranged from R9 500 to R960. One individual claimed R5 000 for damaged equipment and food and another R48 474,83 for damage to a vehicle.

Nkosi said the municipality was obliged to submit the residents’ claims to its insurance company, but it would also let the company know that the claims dealt with damage resulting from natural causes.

Mayor Chris Ndlela asked Exco members if it was normal for someone to claim R9 500 for monthly groceries.

Said Democratic Alliance caucus leader Bill Lambert: “I think it is a culture with people that when there is insurance involved, they become overzealous.”
