Murder: Life plus 15 years for killers

2011-12-05 00:00

THREE men who murdered a Pietermaritzburg man who accompanied them on a “pub crawl”, in order to rob him of his car and valuables, have each been sentenced to life plus 15 years’ imprisonment by high court Judge Gregory Kruger.

The judge said the trio — Zamokuhle Ncalane (30), Simanga Ngcobo (27) of Imbali, and Thamsanqa Mchunu (28) of Caluza, showed a “cold and callous disregard for human life” and told them the sooner society was rid of them the better.

The judge said what started as a “pub crawl” on the night of October 4, 2008, should not have ended as it did.

Like the accused, the victim, Lindani Khumalo, who resided in the Epworth area, had been having a good time. He had driven the trio to various shebeens and taverns in his car where they drank together.

The judge said the trio decided to take advantage of Khumalo and rob him of his car and property out of pure greed.

After he was assaulted, Khumalo was stuffed into the boot of his own car and eventually thrown into the Duzi river.

According to evidence, the accused at one point decided to ascertain if Khumalo was dead and when they discovered he was still alive, pulled him out only to brutally assault him again and throw him back into the water.

They commented that if he was not dead he would surely drown.
