Murder: Man killed hubby for money

2008-10-24 00:00

A Pietermaritzburg man who acted as master of ceremonies at the funeral of the bus driver he murdered said the killing was done at the behest of the driver’s wife, who was his lover, and offered him money.

Mbekeni Dlamini said his lover, Thoko Ngwenya, asked him to kill her husband Sipho. She told Dlamini that she and Sipho had not slept together since Sipho tried to attack her with an axe.

She told Dlamini that Sipho had contributed to insurance policies and she offered him R7 000 to have Sipho killed. She said more money would follow.

Dlamini said that at 2 am on June 27, 2004, he shot Sipho as Sipho was leaving his home to go to work. Sipho managed to board a bus that was sent to collect him for work, but he died on the bus.

Dlamini said he is prepared to assist the state to prosecute Ngwenya if required. He’ll be sentenced on Monday.
