Murder: No one knew first aid

2010-10-12 00:00

THE murder of Nomcebo Mvelase outside the Cathedral of Holy Nativity on Friday has given one bystander the drive to learn first aid in order to save lives and urge others to do the same.

Mvelase was stabbed a number of times by an unkown man and died at the scene.

A witness who did no want to be named said that if the paramedics had arrived sooner, Mvelase’s life might have been saved.

“Unfortunately, no one at the scene had any first-aid supplies or the skills to deal with the extreme circumstances of the injuries — so we all stood phoning, praying and willing her to live long enough to get help ...

“...clearly in this country, unless you are lucky enough to have people around you who know how to help you, you are going to die waiting for the ambulance,” she added.

Police said no arrests have been made and the motive is unknown.
