Murder: Pelham Liquors shooting trial starts

2008-10-15 00:00

Five men have pleaded not guilty in the Pietermaritzburg High Court to murdering 19-year-old Idannis John Canos at the Pelham Liquors bottle store during a robbery there on June 22, 2006.

The accused — Vusumuzi Ngcobo (27) of kwaMashu, Ntokozo Zondi (19) of Imbali, Bheki Nzama (31) of Cato Manor, Sifiso Thusi (25) and Zenzele Mkhize (22), also of kwaMashu — are also charged with robbery (of cash and liquor) with aggravating circumstances, and charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

The state alleges that the accused came from Durban in Nzama’s kombi and went to Southgate Shopping Centre, where a robbery was to take place.

However, the group abandoned their plan and decided to rob Pelham Liquors.

At the store, Ngcobo allegedly shot Canos in the head while demanding money at gunpoint.

The group robbed Canos’s parents — Gabrial and Postira Canos — and other shop employees of cash and liquor, before fleeing the scene in the kombi.

The stolen money was allegedly divided between them in Imbali where they also consumed some of the stolen liquor. The case is proceeding.
