Murder accused nabbed in drug bust

A man who was granted bail and ordered to be detained under virtual house arrest pending his trial in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on murder and attempted murder charges later this year, was one of two men caught in a Pietermaritzburg police drug bust on Thursday.

The suspects were allegedly caught in possession of 2 100 Roche/Sandoz tablets with an estimated street value of R40 000. The suspects, aged 34 and 35, according to police, cannot be named until they appear in court today.

The men were arrested at about 1.30 pm on Thursday by members of the Pietermaritzburg Crime Intelligence Unit under the command of Captain Rumen Maistry, assisted by members of the Pietermaritzburg dog unit.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said the men are being held on charges of dealing in drugs and contravening the Medicines Act.

She confirmed that one of the men, from Estcourt, is currently facing murder and attempted murder charges arising from a shooting incident on the N3 highway in May 2007.

The man, who was granted bail of R20 000, was allowed to return to his home town following a heart attack, but due to fears expressed by his alleged victim and her family, his bail conditions were amended in April this year.

On that occasion, a high court judge ruled that he is not allowed to leave his home in Estcourt except at specified times to visit the mosque, to report to the police and to attend to his business. He was ordered not to enter or drive in the road where the alleged victim’s family resides, not to interfere with witnesses and further ordered not to leave Estcourt without notifying the investigating officer in writing.
