Murder: accused officer suspended without pay

2011-06-28 00:00

MORNE Croeser, the police officer who is on trial for the murder of his wife at their Albert Falls home, has been suspended without pay or benefits.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed yesterday that Croeser was suspended on May 18.

Croeser is charged with murdering his wife, Erika, by stabbing her 14 times on August 28 last year.

He was transferred from SAPS Pietermaritzburg Dog Unit at Mountain Rise police station to the Pietermaritzburg police station pending suspension after he was charged with the murder.

His criminal case was adjourned to August 29. He is currently out on bail.

Naicker also confirmed that two months ago, police at Town Hill police station received a complaint of a “disturbance” at Croeser’s family home. “That matter was resolved and no case was opened.”

He declined to elaborate on the nature of the disturbance and would not confirm reports that Croeser had allegedly been involved in a domestic dispute.

Naicker said the date of Croeser’s next disciplinary hearing has not yet been set. “The disciplinary [process] is still continuing, however, care needs to be taken so that we do not jeopardise the criminal case against Croeser,” he said.

Erika died at the scene of “multiple penetrating incised wounds”.

During a bail application, Croeser admitted having assaulted his wife during January 2010; that he had been unfaithful to his wife and had “more than one” affair.

He also admitted that he was involved in a relationship with his then girlfriend at the time of the murder.
