Murder accused pair in court

2010-08-05 00:00

A ZIMBABWEAN man and his girlfriend appeared in court yesterday in connection with the gruesome murder of a journalist couple who lived in the same Pinetown complex, and the woman said she intends to plead guilty.

A family member found the decomposing bodies of Graham Lizamore (62) and his wife, Kate (50), in their house just over a week ago after they had not answered their phone for several days.

A plastic bag was over Kate Lizamore’s head, while her husband’s hands and feet were bound.

Police believe that the couple, who moved to Pinetown from the Eastern Cape just over a month ago, were murdered three days earlier, said Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

He said a neighbour heard a commotion at the Lizamores’ house the Wednesday before last. When the murders were discovered on Friday, their house keys were lying on a table and nothing had been stolen.

Brian Ali (24) from Zimbabwe and his girlfriend, Thabisile Jali (27), were arrested in the Klaarwater township on Monday by members of the organised crime unit.

At their first court appearance yesterday, Jali indicated she wishes to plead guilty, while Ali asked for legal representation. They will appear in court again next Thursday.

Graham Lizamore’s journalism career included a period as agriculture editor of The Witness in the 1980s.

He and his wife founded the Barberton Times in 2001 and they later worked for the Daily Despatch in the Eastern Cape. At the time of her death, Kate Lizamore worked for Independent Newspapers in Durban.
