Murder accused said he was there, court hears

2011-07-07 00:00

LIEUTENANT Colonel Carel Landman yesterday told acting high court Judge Kobus Booyens and assessors that one of six men currently standing trial for the 2007 murder of a Greytown police dog handler, Ageet Mewa, had stated that he was present and involved in the incident in question.

This occurred during a “pointing out” in March 2008 by one of the accused, Wiseman Zuke.

Landman said his notes reflected that during the course of the pointing out Zuke had said he was the driver of a navy VW kombi. He had waited for the people to come back after the robbery. He did not witness any shooting, but said he “only heard the sounds of gunshots”.

The accused are charged with shooting Mewa and wounding his colleague, Navin Maharaj, when the two policemen drove past the scene of an armed robbery that was in progress at Aheers Superstore in Greytown.

Zuke and his five co-accused have pleaded not guilty to a total of 13 charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition arising from the incident at Aheers Superstore in November 2007.
