Murder: accused under observation

2010-08-02 00:00

SIHLE Mhlongo (24), the man charged with bludgeoning a pregnant woman to death in Boom Street a year ago, has been sent for further mental observation.

Mhlongo has made three court appearances since psychiatrists found him fit to stand trial. He was recently summoned for trial in the regional court.

He is charged with the murder of Nompumelelo Ndlovu (21) of Impendle, whom he allegedly attacked with an iron bar, killing her in front of horrified onlookers in Boom Street on August 17 last year.

Police shot and injured Mhlongo in order to effect his arrest.

Mhlongo appeared in court again on Friday before regional magistrate Nomusa Nzimande. She noted that he had refused to consult properly with his legal aid attorney. When the court tried to speak to him, he “talks sense”, but would not commit himself when consulting the lawyer, the court noted.

He was referred for mental observation and the case was postponed to August 12.
