Murder and rape: 'sub-normal' killer escapes life sentence

2012-04-05 00:00

A 26-YEAR-OLD was jailed effectively for 25 years yesterday for the robbery, rape and murder of a 36-year-old woman, Bongekile Ngcobo, who was accosted while she was sleeping in her home at Sweetwaters during the night of December 11, 2010.

Acting Judge Kobus Booyens told the killer, Sfiso Sbongiseni Mngadi, he was fortunate to escape life imprisonment for the crimes.

Booyens found earlier that the combined facts that Mngadi had consumed a large quantity of alcohol before committing the offences, as well as evidence by a clinical psychologist that he was of “sub-normal intelligence” amounted to substantial and compelling circumstances which justified less than a life sentence.

The judge ordered that Mngadi must serve at least 20 years imprisonment (four-fifths of his effective sentence) before he can be considered for release on parole.

He was found guilty of having gained entry to Ngcobo’s home by breaking a window on the night in question while she was asleep. He overpowered her, raped her and strangled her before taking off with R4 000 cash she had in the house.

Ngcobo’s sister, Sindi, told The Witness she was satisfied that justice had been done and that the sentence was suitable.

However, she said her heart is “still sore” over the death of her sister who was survived by a daughter two years of age.

She said she is taking care of the little girl.
