2013-03-28 00:00

A former friend of final-year University of KwaZulu-Natal medical student Xolisile Simphiwe Mabele (24) appeared in court yesterday in connection with her rape and murder.

Mabele was found dead in her room at her St Hilliers Residence in Umbilo on Monday. A man handed himself over to the authorities and cannot be named at this stage, the police said.

He was remanded in custody until April 5 for further investigation.

In a statement, UKZN spokesperson Nomonde Mbadi said: “We are deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic loss and untimely death of a final year medical student. The university conveys its deepest condolences to the students’ family and friends”.

Mbadi said the residence has 24 hour security, electronic access control at the gates and at the entrance to the building.

According to a source, the student was discovered by her parent who went to the residence after the family could not reach her on her phone.

One of the students at St Hilliers residence said: “In the morning it was like waking up to a bad dream.”

She said everyone was talking about it when they heard the news.

“It’s quiet now but the air feels thick with sorrow,” she told The Witness.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said they were investigating a case of murder.

“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” said Zwane.
