Murder couple: Reports by psychologist pending

2010-02-15 00:00

THE trial of Pietermaritzburg couple Kalisha Rajcoomar (23) and Amith Sewkarran (26) was postponed until March 29 in the high court, Pietermaritzburg, pending the finalisation of psychological reports on them.

The couple were convicted of the murder of Rajcoomar’s former lover, Sandesh Poorun, in February last year.

They both pleaded guilty, and in statements to the court last October admitted that they had strangled Poorun at The Gables bed-and-breakfast establishment in Scottsville. They disposed of the body by setting fire to it in a remote spot outside Pietermaritzburg.

They claimed in statements to the court that Poorun — by whom Kalisha had a child — had constantly harassed them to the extent that she obtained a protection order against him. However, this had failed to offer them adequate protection, they said.
