Murder ‘part of initiation rite’

2013-05-28 00:00

THE 14-year-old boy from Etwatwa near Benoni who is suspected of killing his mother, grandmother and two siblings with an axe claimed that the act was part of the initiation ritual of a satanic church to which he belongs.

He will appear in court tomorrow.

The boy, who was arrested on Friday afternoon by members of the community, was still in hospital yesterday being treated for injuries sustained when he was assaulted before the police arrived.

The teenager is alleged to have lit candles late on Thursday night and attacked his family with an axe in their one-room home.

The body of his mother was found in the house, and his three-month-old sister in a field about 300 metres away. His grandmother and seven-year-old brother died later in hospital. A sister and a cousin (both aged eight) escaped and ran to call for help.

The case was yesterday postponed in absentia.

Achoel Dlamini, a community leader who helped arrest the boy, said the boy told them he was a member of a satanic church in Daveyton. He allegedly said part of the initiation rite for the church was to murder his family, for which he would receive R10 000. It was not clear who would pay this sum.

He allegedly said he was supposed to drink the blood of his mother and other family members, but because the two girls escaped, he had not.

He took the body of his baby sister to the field and drank her blood there, he allegedly said.

His clothes were soaked in blood when he was arrested.

Occult expert Dr Kobus Jonker said yesterday that he knew nothing about the facts of the case, but on the face of it, drinking victims’ blood and being paid were not common satanic rites.
