Murder suspect dead in cell

THE man that police believe masterminded the murder of prominent Imbali taxi owner Johannes Lindokuhle “Ndo” Tshoba and his wife was found dead in the Pietermaritzburg [old Loop Street] police cells on Sunday morning, before he was due to appear in court yesterday.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said Stanley Bongani Mkhize (46) had been arrested last Thursday for the murder of the taxi owner and his wife, but was found hanging in his cell on Sunday.

Zwane said one of the prisoners who was in the cell with Mkhize woke up and found Mkhize hanging from the neck by a state- issued blanket.

Zwane said no foul play is suspected.

Mkhize’s co-accused, Kwenza Promise Gwala, and a member of KwaPata community policing forum, Lindelani Mathonsi, were sentenced last July by the Pietermaritzburg high court for Tshoba’s murder. They were both sentenced to life imprisonment and Mathosi was also sentenced to 25 years in jail for killing Ndlovu.

They shot Tshoba in front of his 11-year-old son, who was in the yard waiting for his parents to return home.

The murder stunned the Imbali Unit J neighbourhood at the time.

Both Tshoba (38) and his wife Ndlovu (35) were shot in the upper body in the attack and were rushed to hospital. Tshoba died on arrival at hospital and Ndlovu some days later.

Mkhize and his co-accused were arrested and were released on bail, but Mkhize later absconded. He was arrested last Thursday in the Edendale area after being spotted driving a car.

“He was expected to make his court appearance for the alleged murder … on Monday [yesterday],” said Zwane.
