Murdered Oribi couple mourned

2015-03-06 00:00

FRIENDS and family gathered yesterday to mourn Susan and Melvin Lawson who were murdered in their Oribi home last week.

Friends from the tight-knit Oribi community comforted the Lawsons’ family at the New Apostolic Church in Greyling Street, Pietermaritzburg.

Susan Lawson’s niece Sandra Vorster stood outside the church, tears rolling down her face as she recalled fond memories of her late aunt and uncle.

“They were happy, pleasant couple who were always helping anyone who needed it,” she said.

“They would have celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary this August.”

Vorster said the couple were still very much in love even after being married more than three decades.

“They were best friends.”

Vorster said the couple had very similar personalities and always would open their door to anyone who needed them.

Susan’s oldest sister, Margaret van Dyk, said she missed her sister terribly.

“She was always so humble and friendly to everyone,” said Van Dyk.

She said she got along with her brother-in-law very well, adding he had told her he was nervous about living in Oribi.

“I last saw her on January 24. We caught up and she said she was well and we arranged for me to visit her this weekend as next Tuesday is her birthday. She would have turned 72.”

A friend of the Lawsons who would not be named said the couple did everything together and no one ever saw them arguing.

“They were a very sweet couple,” she said.

She added that the Lawsons had helped her many times when she was in need and would be missed by the whole community.
