Murderer leaves the dock with a smile

2012-08-31 00:00

CONVICTED murderer Lungisa Longazane (23) smiled as he left the high court inRamsgate only moments after hearing the emotional rollercoaster that the family of his victim had experienced.

He was found guilty of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

His co-accused in the murder of Ria Coetzee (76), Njabulo Nyawose (26), pleaded guilty last week and was sentenced to life in prison for murder and an additional 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The state called the victim’s son, Bertle Coetzee, to speak about the trauma and difficulties the family had faced since the murder.

“My father had to move out of the house and had to seek counselling. He only moved back home two months after the incident,” said Coetzee.

His father, Fanie (77), still had nightmares. He was afraid to be left alone at home, afraid to sleep and was scared every time he left home or returned home.

“The children in our family have had difficulties in school. They are also scared to be home alone and no longer sleep in their own bedrooms,” he said.

Judge Ndlovu told the court that the accused had participated in the crimes and enjoyed their fruit.

“The accused confirmed that he had several opportunities to walk away … he was not faced with a situation of emergency,” said Ndlovu.

Longazane will be sentenced today.
