Murder/rape spree: Man killed protectors, then raped women

2008-03-04 00:00

RELEASED on parole about 30 months before completing his jail sentence, a Ladysmith serial killer and rapist went on a crime spree that earned him five life sentences plus 53 years in jail last week.

With each life sentence imposed on Vusumuzi Innocent Khumalo (35) by Judge David Ntshangase cheers rang out from the large crowd that spilled over into passages of the Ladysmith High Court.

When Ntshangase adjourned the court women ululated in joy and relief that a depraved sexual fiend would no longer prey on the community. The crimes were committed between August 2006 and April 2007.

Khumalo’s modus operandi was to kill protectors of women he wanted to rape and sexually abuse.

He shot dead a toddler and her father and then over several hours raped the mother three times and committed three indecent assaults on her. Khumalo was given a life sentence for the three rapes; three four-year sentences for the indecent assaults on the woman and two life sentences for the murders of the father and child.

He attempted to rape a 76-year-old woman, but failed. He was given an eight-year jail term for the attempted rape, four years for making her perform a degrading act and five years for kidnapping her.

He did not stop at murder and sexual depravities. He was sentenced to 15 years’ jail for housebreaking and aggravated robbery.

He shot dead Thobile Mbatha, who refused to accompany him and two other women he kidnapped. He was given life for the murder; five years for kidnapping and four years for indecently assaulting a woman.

When he approached the 76-year-old woman and a friend, Lindiwe Dube, Khumalo shot dead Dube, who had resisted and he made the elderly woman perform indecent acts.

Ntshangase agreed with state advocate Dorian Paver that Khumalo showed no prospect of rehabilitation and ordered that he serve two-thirds of his sentence before being considered for parole.
