It is gratifying that a museum focusing on the Msimang family is to come into existence in Edendale. This will be the first museum in an former township other than the Mandela Museum in Soweto.

The Msimangs have been a distinguished family in this country’s history, running back to 1845 when the first Msimang came to the infant Pietermaritzburg as a colleague of the Methodist missionary, James Allison. The current owner of their historic home in Edendale, the octogenarian L. S. H. Msimang, has generously donated the property to the Msunduzi Municipality for development as a museum. With the house comes 10 hectares of land as well.

Plans for the project are in their infancy at this stage. Considerable money will have to be spent on the restoration of the building and the planned construction of a hall alongside. This property will become the depository for rich memorabilia from the Msimang legacy of service to the nation in various important spheres. Other resources will be housed there as well and this new museum in the city will become another historical anchor to provide inspiration and encouragement to future generations.
