MUSEUMS are part of our heritage, which in turn plays an important role in promoting nation building.

So said Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha, speaking at a celebration of International Museum Day, which was celebrated on Friday at Msunduzi Museum (Voortrekker Museum).

Department spokesperson Mluleki Mtungwa said the

occasion also marked the launch of two mobile museums worth R1,2 million.

“We have not brought them here because we are still branding them,” he said.

International Museum Day was declared 36 years ago, said the MEC. “The most important aspect of this day is to meet at the museum and reminisce about these institutions as important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among people.”

“This project is geared towards capturing our forgotten histories. It is aimed at bridging the gap between the young and old,” she said.

It also sought to heal the wounds of the past and promote reconciliation.

Sibhidla-Saphetha said her department had embarked on a process to digitise artefacts and sensitive material to preserve its collection of items.

“This will enhance access to the provincial collection with minimal handling of artefacts. The first phase of digitising over 6 000 sensitive and most valuable items has been completed.”

She said the department had more than 32 000 museum items.
