Music Awards: ‘Idols’ judge Abrahams named CEO

2011-10-18 00:00

RANDALL Abrahams, mostly known as an Idols judge, has been appointed CEO of the South African Music Awards (Sama), the Recording Industry of South Africa (Risa) said recently.

Abrahams takes the helm as preparations for the 18th edition of the Samas get under way.

Former Sony Music head and Sampra chairperson Keith Lister will chair Risa’s Sama supervisory board, bringing experience and insight to the running of the country’s most prestigious music awards event to the position.

Abrahams, a music industry heavyweight, will be required to steer the Samas away from the disastrous 17th edition, which attracted widespread criticism for poor production quality.

His credentials cover both private (YFM) and public radio, including a four-year stint as general manager of commercial radio at the SABC, responsible for Metro FM, 5fm, and Good Hope FM.

His consultancy work for the digital and PR industries and experience gained from his role as chairperson of the National Association of Broadcasters and on-air — on Cape Town’s Heart 104.9fm — means Abrahams is extremely well-placed to elevate the Samas to a world class standard.
