Music fests abound in KZN

THIS weekend sees an overpopulated line-up of musicians descending on KwaZulu-Natal, with big music events happening from Underberg to Durban and just about everywhere in between.

At Splashy Fen today’s line-up include the Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters (this year’s featured act), Ard Matthews, Vusi Mahlasela, Boo! and Goodluck. Day tickets at the gate are R250 for today and R100 if you go tomorrow.

The Fen yesterday paid tribute to the late Syd Kitchen with a memorial service and musicians sharing memories of this “musos’ muso”.

Kitchen’s affiliation with Splashy Fen dates back to the festival’s begbeginning 21 years ago.

“I remember the day he re-enacted his wedding vowels on stage back in 2009,” said Steven Squire in charge of musicians hospitality at the festival.

Video clips of Kitchens’ various performances and compositions were screened at the Grant Erskine Marquee, with the audience applauding his dexterous guitar playing. The Aquarian Quartet, of which Kitchen was a part, staged performance in his memory throughout Friday.

The new Vodacom uMgungundlovu Youth Easter Music Festival, which debuts at the Mayor’s Garden and Midmar this weekend, features the Youth Festival tonight and the jazz festival tomorrow.

Tonight at Mayor’s Garden the show starts at 7 o’clock and features kwaito artists Mdu Masilela, Trompies, L’vovo, Durban Poizn, Msawawa, Da Babes, Sosha, Big Nuz and Benzy No Mzeyks, among others. Tickets are available from Shoprite/Checkers and Computicket for R100.

Tomorrow’s all-day jazz and gospel music event at Midmar includes Caiphus Semenya, Hugh Masekela, Lira, Siphokazi, Nhlanhla Nciza, Nhlanhla Mnikathi, Zakes Bantwini, Theo, Nhlengethwa, Ntokozo, Masinga and Nomalanga. Tickets are available from Shoprite/Checkers and Computicket ( for R175.

Pietermaritzburg pop and R&B duo DèMonique will open for rap superstar Pitbull when he performs at the Wavehouse in Gateway shopping centre, Umhlanga, today.

The more sedate Bruce Baker Quartet will be performing in the lecture room DSLT on PMB UKZN’s main campus at 7 o’clock tonight.

Tickets are R25 for students and scholars and R50 for others.
