Musical collaboration to perform in Kloof

2008-01-29 00:00

King of the Zulu guitar, Madala Kunene, teams up with flautist Bella V (otherwise known as Vivienne Simchowitz) at the Luna Lounge in Kloof for a single performance on February 2.

Bella V was born in Johannesburg and as a student found the improvisational sounds coming out of Soweto at the time a strong influence on her musical career. She has performed in many countries including Australia, Israel, Turkey, Europe and the Americas, while home-schooling her two children. Now, after 34 years of performing abroad, Bella V has returned to her home town of Durban.

She recently met Kunene and they decided to collaborate. Kunene needs no introduction to local music lovers.

Born in Durban in the fifties he refused to attend school and started busking in the Durban streets at the age of seven. Later he moved to Johannesburg and shared the stage with Busi Mhlongo and Doc Mathlalane. The violence of the seventies brought him back home to protect his family and his KZN career took off from there.

Bella V and Kunene will perform from 7 pm on Saturday. Entrance is R60 per person. Call Debbie on 072 280 1949 or Narene on 083 659 3628 for more information.
