Musicians Club: Maritzburg old-timers pay tribute to Simon and Garfunkel

2008-10-17 00:00

Ant Jenkins has put together a band of Maritzburg old-timers whose most important items of equipment are their bifocal specs which enable them to engage with their audience as well as read their music.

Jenkins, who has been playing with Bernard von Weichardt as Double Take for about 12 years, and previously played extensively in and around KwaZulu-Natal as a one-man-band in the eighties, has put together a group of middle-aged musicians from Pietermaritzburg, to perform a tribute to Simon and Garfunkel at the next gathering of the Pietermaritzburg Musicians Club at the Red Door on October 21 from 8.30 pm.

Jenkins has always focused on vocals in his performances and has a special penchant for tight harmonies, which particularly suit the repertoire of Simon and Garfunkel numbers that he has selected for the performance.

The band consists of Jenkins (acoustic guitar and vocals), Von Weichardt (acoustic and lead guitar, and vocals), Robin Brown (bass guitar and vocals) and Mark Pitcher (drums) — all of whom formed the core of the backing band for the Bull and Bush music hall stage shows in the nineties. Also in the group are Claire Robertson (keyboards) and Richard Robertson (saxophone, percussion and vocals).

Warren Shone will open the evening with his own style of acoustic guitar, mixed with covers.

The evening takes place at the Red Door and entrance is R15. Inquiries: 084 555 3112 or visit
