Musicians perform at spiritual concert

2009-11-24 00:00

INTERNATIONAL musicians, His Holiness Lokanath Swami Maharaj and Shashika Mooruth (Sacci Devi Dasi) will perform at the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskon) Pietermaritzburg’s spiritual concert at the Aryan Hall on November 27 at 6.30 pm.

They will be joined on stage by Durban band, Swarang.

Maharaj, who travels and preaches to people living in remote Indian villages as well as to those living in cities in the developed world, will lead the Kirtan (call-and-response) chanting performed in India’s devotional tradition.

Kirtan, which became common with the spread of Brahma Gaudiya Vaishnavism by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in the sixties, involves chanting hymns or mantras to the accompaniment of instruments such as the harmonium, the two-headed mrdanga or pakawaj drum and karatal hand cymbals.

Sharing the stage with him is vocalist Mooruth, whose unique presentation style captivates audiences. Spokesman for Iskon Pietermaritzburg, Mr L. M. Naidoo, said: “Many people have turned to a spiritual life after listening to her music and classes … and she has the ability to attract all age groups in her programmes because she reaches out to everyone in her audience.”

She was honoured in 1995 at the World Hindu Conference in South Africa for her contribution to Indian music and has recorded a number of successful albums, including Sneha and Dil Mein Tum.

Tickets for the concert are R50, which includes prasadam (supper). To book your seat, phone 033 387 4583 or 072 306 7822.
