‘My name isn’t really Pixie at all’

2009-04-03 00:00

Top 10 Idols contestant Pixie Bennett has been described as bubbly, talented, and not to mention cute. One thing judges on the show did not point out is that the 25-year-old is, above all, driven — so driven, in fact, she even changed her name.

Okay, so this isn’t exactly true, but the pint-sized knock-out wasn’t always known as Pixie.

Born on February 17, 1984, Laura Bennett began her rise to stardom at an early age. Her earliest memory of the stage was when she played Mary in a nativity play when she was in grade two. “I had such a big crush on the guy who played Joseph. But, he was in grade one … I’ve always been a tart,” she said with a laugh.

She said Pixie is a name everyone calls her because she is so tiny, “so it’s not like I gave it to myself”.

“Nobody’s called me Laura for close to nine years now, not even my family,” she said. “I didn’t change my name. It’s just a name everyone calls me — since university days.”

Pixie registered at UCT after matriculating from Howick High in 2002, but dropped out to pursue a career in music that would take her all the way to Europe (a few times, actually). “I performed in Ibiza and Spain and Germany … I danced when I was abroad too.”

When she decided to take on the SA music industry, she formed the Pixie Bennett Band, based in Durban. They’ve been promoting their jazzy, soulful, folk-ish music ever since.

But the 25-year-old, who is currently in Durban strategising a plan of action with her group, hopes the fact that she made the Top 10 will “add a little more weight” to their name — and get them signed.

“I did enter to win, everyone does,” she said. “But it’s a blessing to get that kind of exposure. It adds weight, especially now.”

Pixie said the saddest part about leaving Idols was leaving behind all the friends she made on the show.

“I was very close to Graeme and a lot of the other contestants,” she said. “They are a great group of talented people.”

When asked about her alleged romantic relationship with fellow contestant Graeme Watkins, Pixie responded, “Wasn’t me.”

“Graeme and I are just really good friends,” she said. “When you have so much in common with someone, of course you’re going to form a good friendship.”

Pixie said both she and Graeme are already in committed relationships. “Our partners are even friends with each other.”

She did say that two relationships developed on the show. “But my lips are sealed,” she said. “watch closely, you’ll figure out who they are”.

Pixie also said she disagrees with Mara Louw’s comments about race playing a big part in the voting on the show.

“Lendell is still there. Thembi is still there. I am white and I’m voted out,” she said. “It’s more about the fans and how much they vote,” she said.
