Mystery: Hundresds of DA posters found in kitchen of commune

2011-05-12 00:00

ELECTION candidates’ faces appear on billboards, street posters, TV and flyers. But no-one expects to be confronted by hundreds of those faces in their kitchen, before their first cup of coffee in the morning.

This is exactly what happened to a Fillan Park resident, who walked into the kitchen of his commune yesterday morning to find himself faced with hundreds of DA ward candidates.

Overnight the kitchen had been packed with posters advertising faces for the upcoming local government elections, featuring DA candidates such as Nkululeko Mthethwa, Qambindlela Khanyile and Mnikezeni Ngubane.

“The kitchen was full of posters, and I don’t know where they came from.” said Themba Nkuna.

The posters were all in brand new, pristine condition and had not even had holes punched in them for the ties.

One of the other residents of the commune said he had seen the posters being carried in and out all morning. “I didn’t want to ask,” he said.

After an investigation and several phone calls to the DA offices in Pietermaritzburg, Nkuna was able to establish the origin of the mysterious posters. One of his housemates was running a business which involves hanging up posters for the parties involved in the local government elections.

DA spokesperson Fanie Scriven confirmed that the posters were distributed by one of the house members, who acted independently from the party in providing this service.
