Mystics have a go at predicting the fortunes of Durban July favourites

2010-07-30 00:00

HORSE racing enthusiasts are exploring all avenues to determine whether their favourite steed will cross the finish line first.

From tarot card readers and sangomas to magic beans — all the stops are being pulled out as race day approaches.

A “spiritual guider” from Hillcrest, Brenda Lindon, drew four tarot cards to indicate the success of four specific runners.

The cards identified Red Rake, Goat, River Jetez and Ancestral Fore as the runners that have what it takes to win.

Even sangomas are trying their hand.

Thembisani Xolani of Clermont threw the bones and predicted that Orbison will take the top spot, with Fabiani, Vertical Takeoff and Flying Tristram following closely behind.

Perhaps the strangest method of prediction is the annual bean growing tradition.

Twenty beans are potted and labelled individually with a horse’s name. The growth and strength of the beans are said to be indicative of the horses’ abilities to clinch a win on race day.

According to the winning bean, Rudra will take the lead.

The current favourite — according to empirical statistics and performance analys — is Irish Flame, but the horse was not mentioned in any of the three unorthodox predictions methods.
