N West meet WP in women’s final

IT’S a North West versus Western Province final in the SA under-21 Women’s Interprovincial Hockey Tournament at the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf today.

Come 3 pm at the ABJ, it’s going to be a battle of wits between WP coach Jade Hearne and North West’s Sheldon Rostron as much as it’s going to be a battle between the two teams — and there’s very little to choose between these opponents, be it coach or team.

WP withstood a determined Free State to win their vital match 2-1 at Maritzburg College’s Pape’s Astro in the dawn patrol match yesterday, and on balance they were well-deserved winners.

North West, too, were full value for their 3-2 win over challengers SA U18 in the battle for the top spot from their pool.

A disappointment has been the performance of host province KZN Inland and cousins KZN Coastal, the former now playing for ninth spot against WP Peninsula at 12 pm at Maritzburg College today. The much-fancied Coastals combination meet Eastern Province for seventh position at the ABJ at 9 am.

And at the men’s U21 IPT in Potchefstroom, Free State will meet WP in the final.

WP accounted for Southern Gauteng — a highly regarded team — 4-2 and Free State wrapped up their unbeaten pool run with a 4-1 defeat of Witwatersrand.

The three/four play-off will therefore be between SG and SA U18, who beat EP 4-3 in their final pool match yesterday.

Again, the KZN teams were very disappointing, Inland losing to Pens 3-0 and now in a battle to avoid the wooden spoon when they take on Border.

KZN Coastal have also been mediocre. Their 1-1 draw with Northerns means they will meet Wits in the play-off for seventh and eighth positions.

Women: KZN Coastal 1 South Gauteng 4; WP 2 Free State 1; KZN Inland 1 Wits 1; SA U18 2 North West 3; Pens 2 Namibia 1; Northerns 3 EP 1.

Men: NG 1 Coast 1; Pens 3 Inl 0; U18 4 EP 2; WP 4 SG 2; NW 1 Border 0; FS 4 Wits 1.

Women (ABJ unless stated): (11/12) 10 am Nam vs Wits (MC); (9/10) 12 pm Pens vs Inl (MC); (7/8) 9 am Coast vs EP; (5/6) 11 am FS vs NG; (3/4) 1 pm SG vs U18; (1/2) 3 pm WP vs NW.

Men (Potchefstroom): (11/12) Inl vs Bdr; (9/10) EP vs NW; (7/8) Coast vs Wits; (5/6) Pens vs NG; (3/4) U18 vs SG; (1/2) FS vs WP.
