N3: Four people die in car crash

2013-08-13 00:00

FOUR people died in a horror crash on the KwaZulu-Natal side of Van Reenen’s Pass yesterday afternoon.

Zinhle Mngomezulu, spokesperson for the Road Traffic Inspectorate, said a truck was travelling down the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg and two cars, a Volvo and a Toyota Corolla, were travelling towards Johannesburg when the accident occurred.

She said the Toyota Corolla, registered to a Johannesburg man, bounced against the truck and then struck the Volvo, landing under the truck. The truck was not able to stop in time.

“There were four people inside the car and they were all killed, as the car went under the truck.”

She said both the north- and the southbound lanes had to be closed for at least two hours while the scene was cleared.

The accident caused a traffic backlog on the freeway, which stretched for almost seven kilometres, said Mngomezulu.
