N3 accident ruins Cleland youngster’s birthday plans

2011-04-19 00:00

A DRIVE to the Golden Horse Casino to start a day-long birthday celebration for a young Cleland man was spoiled when his vehicle was badly crushed on the N3 in Pietermaritzburg yesterday morning.

Avirash Sewraj was excited about his special day as he was turning 20 years old. He had planned to start the day by spending quality time with his 18-year-old girlfriend from Northdale.

However, on the way from his girlfriend’s home to the Golden Horse Casino things went amiss when his Toyota Corolla vehicle was crushed by a truck. He sustained a bruise on his left cheek, while his girlfriend was left in a state of shock.

“I’m turning 20 today and it is my birthday, but everything is over as my day has now been spoiled,” said the distraught Sewraj.

“I was going to the Golden Horse with my girlfriend to have fun.”

Sewraj said he was driving in the fast lane when a white Tata truck, which was transporting empty tins of paint from Ladysmith to Durban, tried to overtake another truck on the Msunduzi River Bridge.

“The truck hit my car on the front before it hit another truck — which it was trying to overtake — before it landed on the embankment,” said Sewraj.

The Tata truck driver, Robert Khumalo (42), said he only noticed danger when Sewraj’s vehicle hit the front of his truck.

“When this car hit mine I lost control and ended down there. I got injured on my right shoulder and left hand.

“Now maybe you can tell me how do I go about getting in touch with the Road Accident Fund?” asked Khumalo.
