N3 blocked: truck crash jams traffic for 11 hours

2008-06-27 00:00

Traffic was backed up for more than 11 hours on the N3 after two trucks collided just after midnight yesterday and burst into flames. One of the truck drivers died, trapped in the burning truck.

KZN Transport Department spokesman Rajen Chinaboo said the accident occurred between Cato Ridge and Hammarsdale. A truck transporting Cremora collided with a truck carrying maize meal.

The driver of the Cremora truck was trapped as the vehicle caught alight. His passenger managed to escape uninjured and the driver of the other truck also escaped harm.

Both vehicles burnt out and spilt their contents on the road. The road was only cleared at midday.

Traffic was backed up all the way from Cato Ridge to Ashburton.

“Although traffic was … diverted, … many … [were] stuck in lengthy traffic jams,” said Chinaboo.

He said drivers disregard laws and endanger other road users when they do u-turns across the highway.
