N3 closed for hours after oil spillage

2014-09-19 00:00

THE N3 was closed for more than 10 hours yesterday following an oil spillage.

An oil tanker spilled 20 000 litres of oil on the south bound lane in the Lions River area, resulting in the closure of the road from 6 am.

Light motor vehicles were diverted to other routes while the heavy duty vehicles were stacked.

A frustrated local businessman who owns a trucking company called The Witness around 3 pm to complain that his truck had been stuck since 6 am.

“This is the busiest route in Africa, how could they close it for so long?” he said.

He said the crisis management by the Department of Transport was shocking.

“Questions need to be asked why these oil tankers are on the road when they should be on the railway,” he said.

The department’s Zinhle Mngomezulu said the N3 southbound lanes were still closed and they were not sure when they would be opened as the clean-up operations were still ongoing. This was around 4.30 pm.

She said, however, trucks that were transporting livestock were given priority. “Those [livestock trucks] are not stacked, they are diverted immediately because they are monitored as they approach the scene, or they are escorted immediately.”
