THE man who was killed in a collision while reversing his car near the Market Road on-ramp on the N3 on Saturday has been identified as a Durban metered taxi driver.

He was killed in the accident at around 10 pm after he had taken a wrong turn.

Thulebona Chibase (40) worked for Ethekwini Meter Taxis in Durban, but lived in Pietermaritzburg.

Chibase was visiting his family in Pietermaritzburg. He apparently took the Market Road on-ramp, but realised he had taken the wrong turning. He then tried to reverse his Nissan Almera back onto the N3.

“A Toyota Corolla came and crushed him from behind. The deceased died at the scene while the wife of the Corolla driver was taken to Midlands Medical Centre to be treated for serious injuries,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan.

Said Yunus Abdulla (52), the driver of the Toyota Corolla, “As I was approaching the blind rise I saw this big thing in front of me with no lights on, and I banged it. The guy was reversing with no reverse lights on.”
