N3 horror: two die, four critical as taxi flips

2009-11-09 00:00

TWO commuters died in a taxi accident on the N3 near Shongweni yesterday afternoon, ER24 said in a statement.

ER24’s Derrick Banks said that four other commuters were critically injured in the horror accident.

The minibus was on the way to Pietermaritzburg when it overturned, leaving all 18 occupants and the driver injured, he said.

The patients were found lying all over the scene where it is believed that they were ejected from the minibus taxi when the vehicle overturned. Four of the passengers are in a critical condition and required stabilisation by ER24 advanced life support paramedics from Durban as well as Pietermaritzburg before being taken to hospital.

The four patients are still fighting for their lives at the moment and Aeromedical helicopters were called to the scene to take them to specialist centres in the Durban and Pietermaritzburg areas.

Nine other passengers were left with serious injuries but they are all in a stable condition.

Other emergency services were on the scene and assisted in the management of the scene as the freeway was obstructed and created traffic disturbances. SAPS will be investigating the incident, added Banks.
