N3: truck accident closes van reenen’s again

2011-08-04 00:00

VAN Reenen’s Pass was closed for six hours yesterday morning after two trucks collided, leaving two unnamed people dead.

The trucks were travelling in opposite directions when they collided.

Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said one heavy- duty truck was headed towards Johannesburg and the other to Durban.

The Johannesburg-bound truck was carrying a load of steel and its driver and his assistant died on the scene while the driver of the other truck escaped with no injuries.

The highway was completely closed for some time. Later, one south-bound lane was opened, followed by a north-bound lane.

“At this stage we don’t know what the other truck was carrying,” said Mngomezulu.

The cause of the accident is not known.

The pass was closed for 40 hours by last week’s heavy snow, leaving thousands of trucks stranded, as well as buses and cars. — WR.
