NFP alliance with ANC in trouble

2012-06-22 00:00

CRACKS are appearing in the relationship between the ANC and National Freedom Party in the Imbabazane Municipality, near Estcourt, where the NFP has joined hands with its former arch-rivals, the Inkatha Freedom Party.

At a meeting this week NFP councillors joined forces with the IFP and the Democratic Alliance to oust mayor P.G. Strydom and speaker Mondli Mkhize, both from the ANC.

Mbuzeni Mkhize (NFP) was installed as mayor, while his deputy, Thembelihle Mqukula, is from the IFP. The new speaker is the NFP’s Bheki Mazibuko.

Both the new and the old leadership could not be reached last night, but a councillor who declined not be named was quoted in Ilanga newspaper saying that the ANC leaders were ousted because of unhappiness over their “dictatorial” management style.

NFP secretary-general Nhlanhla Khubisa said his party would convene an urgent meeting with the ANC to find out exactly what had happened at Imbabazane.

He said the NFP was committed to its coalition with the ANC.

KZN ANC secretary Sihle Zikalala said his party had noted the development.

“Our approach will not be informed by emotions but by real issues that are prevailing there. We did indicate before we entered into this partnership with the NFP that the relationship will not always be smooth,” he said.
