TWO people were killed and seven were injured in a freak accident involving a white Mercedes-Benz which the National Freedom Party’s president bodyguards were travelling in during the early hours of yesterday morning on R34 on Melmoth Road.

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport’s spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu, Zanele Magwaza-Msibi’s two body guards and one driver were travelling in a white Mercedes with registration number BRZ 437B.

Mngomezulu told The Witness that the Mercedes hit the taxi from behind, causing the taxi to lose control and collide with an Avanza.

“There were three vehicles involved including a white Toyota minibus, a blue Toyota Avanza and a white Mercedes Benz.

Two people died, two were critically injured and five sustained minor injuries.

The injured were taken to Vryheid hospital,” said Mngomezulu.

She said that this was “a rear end collision” and cited speed and to short a following distance as causes of the accident.

Magwaza-Msibi was recently sworn in as a Zululand District mayor. Mngomezulu said that a case of culpable homicide has been opened.
