NPA gag on Breytenbach ‘unfair’

2012-05-28 00:00

GLYNNIS Breytenbach, the suspended regional head of the specialised commercial crime unit, is not allowed in terms of her suspension to speak to anyone in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Her lawyer, Gerhard Wagenaar, said yesterday that the prohibition has meant that for the last month she could not speak to close friends who are also colleagues.

“I have complained in a letter to the NPA and stressed that we find it unfair, because these are her friends.

“I have also asked the NPA for a list of witnesses who they may want to call against Breytenbach, and undertaken that she would not contact them.

“The NPA has not yet answered me.”

Breytenbach was suspended on April 30, a week after she had made an ultimatum to the NPA to review the decision not to charge crime intelligence boss Lieutenant-General Richard Mdluli, or she would apply to the high court for a review.

The NPA is adamant that Breytenbach was suspended pending an investigation of her alleged misuse of authority in the Kumba/Imperial Crown Trading case.

NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said Breytenbach’s suspension and the contents of her memorandum in the Mdluli case are internal matters that will not be discussed with the media.
