‘NPC car travelling to Mandela’s funeral belongs to uMgungundlovu’

AN allegation that an Msunduzi Municipal vehicle was driven to the Eastern Cape to former President Nelson Mandela’s funeral without approval, has been cleared up. The vehicle with an NPC number plate did not belong to the Msunduzi Council but to the uMgungundlovu District Municipality.

The City’s Executive Committee (Exco) was presented with a report last week following an investigation into the incident. This was after media reports on January 20 alleging that an NPC vehicle was spotted on its way to Qunu.

Fleet manager Mthandeni Ngcobo in his report to Exco said the investigation used the tracking system installed in all vehicles. In addition, all those who travelled to the funeral as well as officials who were involved with making arrangements for council dignitaries were questioned.

Ngcobo said that the municipality had hired a vehicle for Chief Whip Truman Magubane, – who who was a fellow Robben Island prisoner with Mandela, to attend the funeral. “The other vehicle, belonging to the district municipality was travelling with them, and this is how the allegation must have come about,” Ngcobo added.

He said tracking devices fitted in council vehicles ensure that if any of them is driven across a provincial border, the municipality is notified.
