THE coastal National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) recovered two drowned bodies and rescued a racing yacht at the weekend.

In Port Edward, the NSRI was called to help recover the body of an unidentified swimmer off the coast.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said: “On Friday afternoon the NSRI volunteer crew were dispatched to assist police search and rescue team with a body recovery operation. The body of an unidentified man had been found floating offshore of Port Edward, and the forensic pathology services are handling it.”

On Saturday, the body of another man was found offshore of New Pier in Durban. The man is thought to have drowned nearby and the NSRI helped the police recover the body from the surf. An inquest docket has been opened.

“Later on Saturday, the NSRI was also called to help with the sea yacht Majimoto, which was taking part in the Colorpress Vasco Da Gama Ocean race, from Maputo to Durban,” said Lambinon.

“They had six crew members on board, and the yacht was suffering mechanical motor failure offshore of Umhlanga. The yacht was towed into the Port of Durban and once safely berthed no further assistance was required.”

The drowned man have not yet been identified by police.
