Namibian couple’s dream holiday in Mozambique ends in horror

2013-12-30 00:00

The couple awoke when a bullet tore through the canvas of their roof tent two days before Christmas while they were sleeping at the Casa Lisa resort, some 50 km north of Maputo.

A still-shaken Adriaan Maritz (26) yesterday said he had inquired repeatedly whether it was safe to travel to Mozambique but the owner of the resort had reassured him all the reports of attacks in the country were only scare mongering.

They woke up when the gang of robbers fired shots and women screamed.

Two men then climbed up the ladder to the roof tent and pulled Maritz to the ground. One attacker hit him over the head and pressed his face into the ground.

Two other attackers then dragged his girlfriend to a vehicle where both raped her.

Other robbers meanwhile fired more shots with AK47 rifles and kicked open doors as they proceeded to rob about 20 other campers, including several children.

The woman, who is in her early twenties, said her rapists had tied her before raping her but she managed to struggle out of the bonds after they left her.

She found Maritz on the ground and did not know if he was alive or dead. When he came to, the couple fled into the adjoining bushes with a professional diver from Zimbabwe, Gordon Allison (58), who had camped next to them. Some of the robbers chased after them and the three hid in the bushes until dawn.

A Mozambican then took them to the nearest police station and Allison helped the Namibian couple get to Nelspruit.

On Christmas Day, sister paper Beeld arranged for an armed guard from Arkhe Risk Solutions to accompany Maritz back to to the Casa Lisa resort to recover his vehicle.
