Nando’s ad a wake-up call to ministers

2014-09-01 00:00

WHAT would happen if four ministers and their blue light brigades met at a four-way stop in Benoni?

This is the premise of Nando’s latest advert, Blue Light Brigade.

Nando’s head of marketing Mike Cathie said the ad was made after a survey showed the topic that frustrates people the most at the moment is ministers and their blue light brigades.

He said this was an issue that not only riled many people, but also one that had some people very worried. The ad, which is rapidly raking in views on YouTube, shows what happens when the power-mad ministers and their enforcers are placed on an equal footing by traffic rules.

Cathie said Nando’s had a duty to comment on social issues on behalf of the public, as the chicken chain has been doing for 25 years. He said people are fed up after the elections, adding some ministers must wake up and start serving the the voters. “They must stop serving themselves.”

DA leader Helen Zille tweeted if the ad was not so close to the truth, it would have been very funny.

Independent market analyst Chris Moerdyk said Nando’s was one of very few companies who could get away with such satirical ads.

Moerdyk said the group is known for its satirical takes on events and trends in South Africa.

Cathie said the group has not received complaints on the ad yet, but they wanted many people to view it online.
