Narandas is still living the high life

CONTROVERSIAL Durban businessman Rajiv Narandas continues to live the “bling” lifestyle, despite having been convicted of murder.

In May, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of Veenand Singh outside Shoukara nightclub in Sandton in 2008.

He lawyers were given leave to appeal the sentence, and Narandas was granted bail.

Narandas (28) recently opened the fifth of his Your Highness boutique stores in Polokwane.

He maintains that he is innocent of the crime, and this week told The Witness how a stint in prison had left him terrified.

“I found myself in a prison in Soweto with 13 000 prisoners.

“I was terrified, because I had been accused of a serious crime,” he said of the day he handed himself over to the police.

In the last six years, he had been to court 39 times.

Narandas said: “I was completely shocked and confused when I was found guilty. I looked at my options, and that is why I appealed. I am willing to prove my innocence all the way.”

However, Narandas chooses to focus on the brighter side of life.

“I had all of this pressure on me, but I decided it was either I let the public, the media and the accusations get to me, or to be optimistic and proceed with my businesses, health and family.”

In March 2010, Narandas started one of his ventures, Dolphin Concerts ,bringing the likes of Akon and Pitbull to the country.

A year later, he opened the first of the Your Highness stores, which import exclusive clothing and shoes for women from China.

“We started Your Highness in my showroom, which is in the house because I could not get into a big mall.

“I wanted to bring in unique clothes inspired by international stars.

“The highs of being a businessman are when you wake up in the morning and there is an SMS from the bank about money that has been paid into your account. The lows would be trying to keep everyone happy.”

Narandas said life was not always about fast cars, girls and money.

“I am human too, and I feel that I have always been judged by what happened and from what people read about me. Even though my parents gave me a comfortable life, I did not get everything on a silver platter.”

From the age of 18, Narandas has bought, owned, modified and sold 18 luxury cars.

Narandas said he loves his girlfriend, Samantha Naidoo (27), very much.

“I am a one-woman man. Sam and I make a brilliant team together. I am almost 30 — I need to settle down now.”
