Nasa astronaut to thrill space fans

2013-11-06 00:00

SPACE and science fans are promised a treat when Nasa astronaut Story Musgrave shares his experiences at the Pietermaritzburg Aero Club’s 75th anniversary luncheon on Saturday (November 9).

“Story Musgrave will be flying in specifically to talk at the Pietermaritzburg Aero Club,” said spokesperson Luke Volans.

Musgrave’s story is one of an amazing life. As a Nasa astronaut for over 30 years, Musgrave flew on six space flights, performed the first shuttle spacewalk on Challenger’s first flight, conducted two classified Department of Defence missions and was the lead spacewalker on the Hubble Telescope repair mission, among other incredible exploits.

He began his career as a Marine and in his 58-year career he accumulated 18 000 hours in over 160 aircraft, and earned FAA ratings for instructor, instrument instructor, glider instructor and airline transport pilot, and earned U.S. Air Force Wings. He has made more than 800 free falls — including over 100 experimental free-fall descents involved with the study of human aerodynamics.

A part-time trauma surgeon for the duration of his astronaut career, his intertwined careers encompass military, aviation, space exploration, medical, research, and more.
