Natalians, K&L rise like phoenix from the ashes

2009-10-30 00:00

BOTH Young Natalians and Ladysmith’s K&L came back like a phoenix from the ashes and turned around the previous weekend’s demoralising thrashings into two excellent performances this past round.

Natalians won by 118 runs against Northern Districts in Newcastle thanks to Shah Kaleem scoring a century with great support from all-rounder Qasim Khurshid’s 52.

Whether the pair are available for Inland must be investigated, as they are surely of enough quality to make Inland’s side.

Khurshid, who may still have Pakistani nationality, took four for 36 and Shah Kaleem four for 10 (another player who must be considered, should he be eligible) as only Husain Essop’s 43 contributed with any note to District’s 133 in reply to Natalians’ 251.

K&L took Lancashire down to the wire in Ladysmith, before going down by three wickets. There is no doubt that Lancs are going all out to win the Inland Premier League this season.

K&L put up a solid 201 for five in their 55 overs for the day, with Shaun Fourie leading the way on a well-played 75 allied to Rydel Ramnarain’s 32 and the in-form Sohail Razack’s unbeaten half-century.

Talented spinner Renoir Patricks picked up three for 66 in 15 overs. Of course Patricks also would have to contend with the highly talented and successful Inland incumbents Morné van Vuuren and Kyle Nipper for a prime spinning berth, but his chances against the other players of colour (six have to be in a team of 11) would give him a chance anyway, as he can bat with skill and concentration when he is in the mood.

Lancs’ former Inland players Brendon Govender hit 57 and Kivershan Padayachee hit 32 as the Woodlands side won by three wickets. K&L’s Afthar Essop took three for 32.

Sadly, the Standard versus Varsity clash at Wanderers Club was rained out after Saturday night’s rain and wind took care of the pitch. The Zingari versus Midlands match at Collegians Club was also called off.

Meanwhile, the Inland women’s team to meet their Coastal counterparts in Durban tomorrow is as follows: Cherri Cannon (Capt), Pippa Payne, Natalie Archer, Sarena Ferreira, Steph Bender, Nadia Hattiah, Gugu Ngcobo, Bianca Sakoor, Avril Forbes, Yuvi Nirghen, Natasha Botha, Phumla Ndlovu and Elonja Behrens.

Inland had a topsy-turvy weekend last time out, winning their first match by a country mile and then losing by the same distance in their second clash at the Varsity Oval.

K&L 201 for 5 in 55 overs (Shaun Fourie 74, Rydel Ramnarain 32, Sohail Razack 53 not out, Renoir Patricks 15-0-66-3). Lancashire 203 for 7 in 47.3 overs (Brendon Govender 57, Kivershan Padayachee 32, Sashen Dorasamy 51 not out, Afthar Essop 5.3-0-32-3). Lancs won by 3 wkts.

Young Natalians scored 251 for 8 in 60 overs (Shah Kaleem 102, Qasim Khurshid 50, Zainul Essop 10-0-41-3). NDCU scored 133 all out in 36 overs (Husain Essop 43, Shah Kaleem 8-2-10-4, Qasim Khurshid 10-2-36-4). Natalians won by 118 runs.

Standard vs Varsity (Rained out); Zingari vs Midlands (Rained out).

Premier League fixtures Sunday: Midlands vs Standard (Eston), Varsity vs Zingari (Varsity), N. Districts vs K&L (Newcastle), Lancs vs Natalians (Khan Road/Protea).
