National colours for College pupils

THREE Maritzburg College pupils have recently received their national colours in three different sporting disciplines.

Byron Watson has been selected for the Springbok Polo team. He becomes the youngest player ever to represent his country in this sport. The Grade 11 pupil is 17 and he was in the team that drew 4-4 with Chile two weeks ago and lost 7-9 on Sunday. In the second Test, Watson scored two of SA’s goals. His uncle Guy (a College Old Boy) was the captain of the team, which included two further Watsons.

Over the past few months, Andrew Martin has been extremely busy with his Downhill MTB racing. After coming first in the Junior Men (U18) age category at the KZN Championships, he went on to win the Junior Men Category at the last round of the National Series in Nelspruit, also finishing 4th overall. After the four-race SA National Series, he ended up first in Junior Men and seventh overall in South Africa.

Martin recently participated at the SA Championships in Port Elizabeth and was placed first in Junior Men and seventh overall.

He has been selected to represent South Africa at the Mountain Bike World Championships this week at Cascades Mountain Bike Park.

The third national representative is Louis Hattingh, another Grade 11 pupil, who has just represented his country at the Canoe Sprint Junior World Championships in Ontario, Canada.
